Artist Statement
“True growth happens from the inside out.”
The “Aspen Series” is inspired by the amazing aspen trees that are in abundance in Colorado. Lori is drawn not only to the texture, but to the movement in the trees themselves. The high contrast of black and white and unique texture is the inspiration for this body of work. This series continues to evolve and now includes pieces that incorporate subtle brown tones and mixed media elements attached to the lids to reinforce the connection to nature.
While most pottery is shaped from the outside, her pots are stretched from the inside out. What would seem like an imperfection in some of them, most notably when the clay tears because it is so thin is actually intentional; a correlation to the human condition. We all have imperfections and stretch marks. It is our imperfections and differences that make each of us unique and beautiful in our own way. Just as each aspen is unique, even though it is connected to the whole grove through its roots.
