The Descendants: A Photographic Journey of Colorado Mustangs

Little Book Cliffs. Sand Wash Basin. Piceance East Douglass. Spring Creek Basin.

Here in Western Colorado are the ranges of free horses that sculpted our lands, cultures and character. These are the descendants. These images reflect their lines from past to present and life to a place. They brand us.

Each photo is framed with reclaimed wood by Gene Reed, a local woodworker in DeBeque Colorado.

About the Artist

In 2019 Sloane Milstein moved to Grand Junction to begin teaching at Colorado Mesa University in the Sport Management program. Outside of her academic life, she sought to find community by engaging in projects that align to her passions, values, and lifestyle. Photography started with a manual camera in high school, followed by a darkroom class in college and then a series of workshops. Initial works were associated with several competitive teams located on the east coast. After 30 years in the equestrian industry as a coach and official she was looking for a noncompetitive outlet. From 2019-2022 she volunteered for both the Friends of the Mustangs and Piceance Mustangs groups which assist with herd and range health. While volunteering she had opportunities to photograph the mustangs.
